Winter Triggers Increased Hair Loss: Expert Suggests Popular Home Remedy

Winter hair breakage and loss are common challenges many face each year. However, a simple daily routine, taking less than 30 minutes, can help maintain healthy, great-looking hair year-round—thanks to a proven solution recommended by a specialist.
Hair shedding increases during winter, more than at other times of the year. It’s a natural occurrence influenced by several factors including wearing hats, dryness from central heating, cold weather, harsh winds, low humidity, dehydration, and increased stress. The darker, colder months can be particularly taxing, as reduced sunlight and a sense of gloominess often heighten stress levels. Combine this with seasonal hair loss, and it’s easy to see how holiday cheer can take a hit.
“Additional hair loss in winter is a little-known phenomenon. Many people don’t even notice it, but for some it’s a worrying issue that can add to the winter stress that further causes it, creating a cycle” says Scott Chaverri, Founder and CEO of Mito Red Light. “But there is a non-invasive treatment you can do at home that can help
to combat hair loss.”

Chaverri recommends a clinically proven way to combat winter hair loss.
“One of the most effective ways to maintain a healthy head of hair during the cold months is red light therapy. Regular light therapy can help promote hair growth in both men and women,” he explains.
Clinical trials have shown promising results for red light therapy in promoting scalp hair regrowth. This therapy boosts blood flow to the scalp, nourishing hair follicles and encouraging them to enter the anagen (growth) phase. Additionally, red light therapy reduces inflammation and enhances the overall function of hair follicles, supporting healthier hair growth.
“Multiple studies have determined red light therapy to be effective for androgenic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss in both men and women,” Chaverri says. “These findings reported increased hair density and thickness after treatment.”
Red light therapy not only helps prevent winter hair loss but also offers additional benefits that can make the colder months more manageable and enjoyable.
Combatting SAD: Red light therapy can help alleviate symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that often occurs during winter. The reduced light exposure in winter disrupts hormone balance, decreasing the production of “happy hormones” like endorphins. Increased light exposure—particularly low-energy red light—can help restore this balance and improve mood.
Get More Sleep: Red light therapy has been shown to regulate melatonin levels, improving sleep quality. Quality sleep, particularly REM sleep—when dreaming occurs—is essential for reducing stress and supporting overall well-being.
Increase Energy: Red light therapy boosts cellular energy production by stimulating mitochondria at the sub-cellular level. This helps combat winter fatigue and increases energy levels, leaving you feeling more motivated and empowered.
Treat Skin Conditions: Light therapy can help improve skin conditions such as acne, dermatitis, wrinkles, and vitiligo, contributing to overall well-being.

“If you’ve got great hair you’re probably going to want to look after it. Winter hair fall isn’t something you have to accept,” Chaverri says. “Using red light therapy in controlled, prescribed ways has been shown to combat this seasonal phenomenon.”
He continued. “Sit in front of your red light panel for about 30 minutes every day. You may want to build up your treatment time, over time; but don’t overdo it. Be consistent and persistent. The therapy won’t work straight away, but it will be stimulating hair growth and fighting hair fall subtly. The therapy is becoming ever-more popular as people realize the widespread benefits and research confirms its effectiveness.”
